“Well, don’t get all mushy on us….”
In celebration of Valentine’s Day this week, I’ve put together a fan-adaptation and video study on the chemistry and bond between the characters Finn & Rey set to SYML – Mr. Sandman. The footage includes scenes from both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Below, I briefly share choices in the editing room along with the video. Pairs nicely with Finn & Rey: Acts of True Love 😉 Hope you enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Eve! ❤
Setting the Mood
I know what you’re thinking: Mr. Sandman? To be honest, the song popped up on my pandora, and I really liked the cover by SYML so I wrote it down as a potential editing track. The cover has a nice slow tick-tock sway that I thought would lend itself perfectly to studying the relationship between two characters in visual cues. After playing around some, I enjoy just how pertinent “sandman” is to Finn and Rey’s introduction, as well as the introduction of the Skywalkers, in general. We are introduced to Anakin the Slave, Luke the Farm Boy, and now Rey the Scavenger meets Finn all in the sands of Tatooine or Jakku. For Anakin, Luke, and Rey, all three have the additional heartache of having said a sorrow-filled goodbye to family in the sand as well.
The lyrics, of course, play on the theme of longing and loneliness Rey carries in the Sequel Trilogy: she’s waited nearly her entire life for her family to return:
Sandman, I’m so alone
– SYML: Mr. Sandman
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
As Finn embarks on his journey from the sands of Jakku to Starkiller base, we see that Finn performs Acts of True Love for Rey, and his return fulfills her deepest desire to be loved and not forgotten.
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
– SYML: Mr. Sandman
Make her the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give her two lips, like roses and clover
And tell her that her lonely nights are over
Whatever bond has formed between Finn and Rey, it appears unbreakable. It is also evident by Rey’s emotional response to Finn returning for her, that her lonely nights are now over. And regardless of where you may or may not stand on the potential for this relationship to become romantic in Episode IX, I hope you enjoy the edit!

[…] This is an honest look into Finn’s perspective at the end of The Last Jedi. But how did Finn and Rey get here? And what exactly has changed about Rey from Finn’s perspective? As we embark on the journey to Episode IX, it’s worth reviewing the Sequel Trilogy through Finn’s Acts of True Love for Rey, along with the chemistry and bond they develop along the way, and yes, perhaps even romance….
